We recently bought a King bed, graduating from our Queen. Because of the cost we skipped buying a headboard. If you haven't ever shopped for one.... they are terribly expensive. Ugh.
I started to google ideas on a DIY headboard... Pinterest had some great ideas as well. After gathering several ideas I went ahead and went for it. To say the least, it was very easy and I was able to do it in about 2 hours.
Here it is.
A fabric cushioned headboard.
A fabric cushioned headboard.
Materials:
Plywood
Choice of fabric
Mattress foam topper
Batting
Staple Gun
Plywood:
I went to Home Depot and had them cut to size a piece of plywood. Now, I measured the width of my bed and added 2 inches. The height is up to you. My measurements came out to 78" x 32"
Cost: $11.00
Fabric:
After roaming the fabric department at JoAnns I found a simple green and cream scroll print that I thought would be a nice neutral color and pattern. I purchased 2.5 yards.
Cost: $12.00
Foam:
To keep things cheap I went to Walmart and purchased a Full Mattress size foam topper.
Cost: $11.99
Batting:
JoAnn's had this as well and it wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. Again, buy according to what your measurements will need.
Cost: $12.99
Now for the project...... haha the pictures are simple cause that's what the project is... simple!
Step ONE:
Smooth out your batting. Place the foam on top of the batting. You will be placing the plywood on top of the foam. To accommodate the measurements, using a scissors I cut the foam to size.
Step TWO:
After cutting and making sure the foam was flush with the wood I pulled the batting over and stapled at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. Then worked my way around making sure the batting stayed clean and even.
Next is the fabric. Lay it face down, smoothing it as best you can. Place your wood face down and repeat the same step you did with the batting. Except, with the fabric, make sure you pull tightly (not too tight) but enough to guarantee that you aren't leaving slack anywhere, or creases. Staple every 2" or 3" inches.
Step FOUR:
Now, as for the hanging. I cheated and measured my headboard knowing I would be pulling the top mattress out, leaving room to slide the headboard down for it to rest on the box spring. After putting the headboard into place we simply pushed the mattress firmly back up against the wall. That way you have a even and hassle free "hang less" headboard. I love it. And, if six months down the road I want to change it up and try another pattern or color.... it will be easy peasy and only cost me a few bucks, literally.
The pictures arent fancy but you get the general idea and steps!!!
This project cost me just under $50.00..... !!!
